The First American Sister of Charity: Elizabeth Bayley Seton is a picturesque and moving account of the life and work of Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (1774-1821), the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized a saint. She was born into high society during some of the most stirring times our country has ever known, the time of the Revolutionary War. Raised staunch Episcopalian, she was devout and true to her faith. Marrying young, she and her husband, William Magee Seton, refined, cultured, a true gentleman, set out joyfully to raise a family. Sadly, tragedy struck, financial losses caused his health to suffer and William was struck by the dreaded tuberculosis. The couple traveled to Italy seeking to restore his health by a sea voyage. Unfortunately, he died in Italy, unable to recover his health. However, while there the greatest gift was given Elizabeth, she gained the Catholic Faith, which became as balm to the soul of the grieved young widow. Returning to the U.S., Elizabeth answered the calling within her heart to further give her life to God, sacrificing all and working tirelessly to establish schools in New York and Maryland, and was the first to found a congregation of Religious Sisters in the United States, the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. She spent the rest of her days leading and developing the new congregation. This book gives beautiful detail to life of this American Saint, an excellent read!

Writings set forth from the pen of St. Francis of Assisi, perhaps the most diverse and well-known of all Saints today, his popularity breaching the walls of both creed and culture. Flowers from the Garden of Saint Francis for Every Day of the Year contains 365 admonitions and inspirations from this great Saint and other notable Franciscans. Often written for the aid of the monks and nuns under his authority and care, they still, however, hold much wisdom easily applicable and directed towards priests, religious, and the lay person of this day. As the compiler of this work so aptly states, St. Francis “was inspired by God, six hundred years ago, to rekindle in His Church the spirit of humility, simplicity, poverty, detachment from the world, and ardent love of our crucified Redeemer.” This is the great work of our beloved Saint, and it shines through in his writings!

Fraternal Charity is an excellent read with valuable insights into the virtue of charity, the virtue that, if well-practiced, will bring us closest to the perfection of Christ. Whether Our Lord was speaking to His ignorant and often rude Apostles, the sick and poor, or with His enemies and sinners, He was always benign, merciful, affable, patient; in a word, His charity appeared in all its most amiable forms. The author wrote this book for members of religious orders, to enrich their practice of charity to each other. However, as the translator notes “Though specially written for religious, it cannot fail to prove beneficial to seculars in every sphere of life; as love, the sunshine of existence, is wanted everywhere.” Would make a great title to listen to as a family, for study, discussion, and growth in the virtue of charity! Who amongst us could not stand to grow in this virtue?

In The Friendship of Christ the great Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson shows us how to achieve a deeper relationship with God the Son. We all have an innate need for friendship; in this timeless work, this need is raised to the supernatural, illustrating the greatest friendship one could ever possess and how to nurture it. The book shows how Christ works in the soul of those who seek Him, in His public life, and in the historical examples given in the Gospels. “There is one supreme friendship to which all human friendship points,” writes Benson, “one ideal Friend in whom we find, perfect and complete, that for which we look in the faces of our human lovers.” In the Part I, the author shows how one enters into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ through the purgative and illuminative ways. In Part II, he discusses several modes in which Christ offers us His friendship here and now, such as in the Eucharist, in the Church, in the priest, in the saint, in the sinner, in the average person, and in the sufferer. In Part III, Benson recalls how Jesus Christ proved the depth of His friendship with us by willingly accepting death on the cross for our sake, and how He raises His friends to everlasting life with Him.

God’s Troubadour, The Story of St. Francis of Assisi, a biography of one of the most loved Saints of all time, was originally written for children 7-10 years old, but is an book that will be enjoyed by all ages. The book tells how the gay, courtly young soldier, Francis Bernardone, became a knight of Jesus Christ, vowed devotion to Lady Poverty and proved himself the “little brother” to all men, and even to the birds and beasts, his beloved friends. The son of a wealthy merchant, Saint Francis of Assisi kept company in his youth with a roving band of young nobles who were bent on having a good time, thinking nothing of the comfort or feelings of other people.
When sickness puts an end to his soldierly ambitions, he turns his back on earthly possessions, much to the disgust of his father, donning a dust-colored robe and tying a plain rope around his waist. Traveling barefooted and bareheaded through the hills of Italy he begins his ministry to the outcasts of society: the lepers, the poor, the hungry. Other men flock to join him and share in his work, including three robbers who feel the transforming power of his love. His powers extend over the animal kingdom as well. He preaches to the birds and he tames the wolf who has been terrorizing the villagers of Gubbio. When he journeys eastward with the Crusaders, he ministers to Saracen and Christian alike. One year at Christmas he presents a living nativity scene to his neighbors, beginning a tradition that has lasted for centuries. A delightful biography, with some stories not often heard, that will hold the attention of listeners of all ages!

The Interior Castle or The Mansions was written by Saint Teresa of Ávila in 1577. After being ordered to write her autobiographical The Life of S. Teresa of Jesus, Teresa was hesitant to begin writing again on her views of the perfection found in internal prayer. Her humility and claims that, “I am not meant for writing; I have neither the health nor the wits for it,” almost prevented Teresa from composing The Interior Castle. However, according to a letter written by Fray Diego, one of Teresa’s former confessors, Teresa was finally convinced to write her book after a she received a vision from God. Diego wrote that God revealed to Teresa, “…a most beautiful crystal globe, made in the shape of a castle, and containing seven mansions, in the seventh and innermost of which was the King of Glory, in the greatest splendor, illumining and beautifying them all. The nearer one got to the center, the stronger was the light; outside the palace limits everything was foul, dark and infested with toads, vipers and other venomous creatures.” With that, Interior Castle was born. It contained the basis for what she felt should be the ideal journey of faith, comparing the contemplative soul to a castle with seven successive interior courts, or chambers, analogous to the seven heavens.

The charming allegory King of the Golden City will bring to the heart of the child a deep love for Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and an understanding of the bountiful graces received in Holy Communion. Hurricane! Volcano eruptions and fire! Leprosy! Nothing deterred Father Damien from doing the work to which he had been called. Outstandingly big and strong as a boy, he was notably kind and determined to help others as a young man. He needed all his strength and kindness when he went to live at the leper colony of Molokai. This children’s biography of Father Damien of Molokai was written by Eva K. Betz, a prolific Catholic writer of history and biography books for children.

The story of The Lepers of Molokai and of the Roman Catholic missionary, Father Damien, who ministered to those who languished in that desolate place, waiting for death to release them from a most intense form of physical and mental suffering. Fr. Damien, born Jozef De Veuster, was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium and member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, a missionary religious order. His charity and care for the lepers was what turned the island into more of a home and refuge for the poor lepers, who had previously been abandoned to live out their days in desolation, unloved, and forgotten by the world. St. Damien won recognition for his ministry to people with leprosy (Hansen’s disease), who had been placed under a government-sanctioned medical quarantine on the remote island of Molokai in the Kingdom of Hawaii. He, himself, contracted and died of this dreaded disease after caring for the physical, spiritual, and emotional needs of the people in the colony for sixteen years.
The author visited Molokai several times, and was quite struck by the holiness and relentless work of Fr. Damien. It was Stoddard, actually, who helped establish Father Damien’s position in public esteem.
