The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens

The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens

The tale of John Peerybingle, the good-hearted carrier, and his young wife Mary (‘Dot’), interwoven with the story of poor toymaker Caleb Plummer, his beloved blind daughter Bertha, and the harsh old toy merchant Tackleton, who is due to marry May Fielding, a childhood friend of Dot. Comic relief is provided by Tilly Slowboy, the disaster-prone nursemaid of John and Dot’s baby, and Boxer, the family dog. The cricket who chirps on the family hearth assumes fairy form to save the day when disaster looms in the form of a mysterious stranger. Sentimental? Certainly – but this, the third (1845) of Dickens’ short Christmas books, is as charming and irresistible as its predecessors A Christmas Carol (1843) and The Chimes (1844).

The novella is subdivided into chapters called ‘Chirps’, similar to the ‘Quarters’ of The Chimes or the ‘Staves’ of A Christmas Carol.

The Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter by Beatrix Potter

The Great Big Treasury of Beatrix Potter contains  nineteen tales featuring a troop of Miss Potter’s most unforgettable characters. Peter Rabbit, the mischievous and rebellious young fellow, is the hero of many a tale, along with his more well-mannered sisters Flopsy, Mopsy and Cotton-tail. Their long-suffering mother strives to keep Peter out of mischief and out of Mr. McGregor’s tempting garden filled with luscious fruits and vegetables. The stories sparkle with Beatrix Potter’s endearing ability to tell a tale, holding your attention with her whimsical way of speech, and quaint Victorian style stories. Other memorable characters include Squirrel Nutkin, who is a most impertinent fellow, Peter Rabbit’s cousin Benjamin Bunny, two bad mice, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Tailor Simpkin, a frog called Mr. Jeremy Fisher, and many more. The stories are a mixture of moral fables, fascinating descriptions of nature, and Victorian childhood naughtiness. Our children always love the stories by Beatrix Potter, fun to see another generation of children loving her works!

The Railway Children by E. Nesbit

The Railway Children by E. Nesbit

Edith Nesbit’s classic story, in which three children, Roberta, Phyllis, and Peter are living a comfortable suburban life with their parents, a cook, and servant. One day two men arrive to visit their father and he leaves with them. The children wonder what’s going on, but their mother doesn’t want them to worry and tells them not to ask questions. Due to their father’s continuing absence, they are forced to move to the country, and are now in poorer circumstances, their mother providing what she can through the stories she writes. Delightfully, the children’s good  and cheerful natures serve them well in this turn of events, and they resiliently find things to enjoy in their new life. They come to know and love the ways of the nearby railways, developing the habit of waving to the train as it goes past and sometimes the people in the coaches wave back. Their friendly habit draws the attention and eventually friendship of one old gentleman who rides the trains, and he comes to help them in various ways. Eventually they find out what happened to their father, and to their great joy, he returns to them, quite fittingly, by train.  A happy ending to an engaging story, another great book by E. Nesbit!

The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit

The Story of the Treasure Seekers by E. Nesbit

The Story of the Treasure Seekers tells of the entertaining adventures and frequent mishaps of the six Bastable children, Dora, Oswald, Dicky, Alice, Noel, and Horace Octavius (H. O.) and their attempts to assist their widowed father and “restore the fortunes of their fallen house” . The children are delightfully imaginative, well-read, well-spoken, thoughtful under the natural childish self-centeredness, and self-sufficient. There is an innocence and genuine decency to their interactions, and a true sibling comradery (they unequivocally accept and allow for each other’s differences/quirks), that is missing in our society and literature so much today. The various schemes the children try are clever, touching, and funny, and often end in mishap. Readers will laugh along at the humorous events, cry along at the sad moments, and enjoy the wholesome goodness of a classic written in a more genteel era.
