Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss

The Swiss Family Robinson has delighted generations of readers with its exciting tale of a family which, though shipwrecked, displays remarkable resilience and ingenuity in making the best of what they’ve been dealt with. Trusting deeply in God, the family, a Swiss pastor, his wife, and four sons, undertake to make a livable home, and provide for their needs, gathering and making use of all they can from the bounteous ship’s stores, as well as the natural abundance available on the island. Cut off from the comforts and companionship of other humans, they use a familiarity with natural history and biology to find the resources and build the tools to construct a canoe, weave cloth, irrigate a garden, and turn an immense hollow tree into a lofty house with a spiral staircase. They domesticate buffaloes, wild asses, and monkeys, as well as, establishing farms and plantations. Not wanting to keep things all peace and bliss, the author throws in a bit of adventure with encounters with terrifying creatures and an alarming run in with natives from a nearby island.

The years go by, the family comes to greatly love the life they’ve built on the island, founding a charming colony that later, they do not want to leave. The language of the book is charming and delightful, the tales colorful, creative, and exciting. A wonderful read from a time when family values were in the right place and believing in, living for, and praying to God was not faux-pas.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

Treasure Island is a rousing tale of “buccaneers and buried gold”. Likely the most popular and well known pirate story ever written, the famed novel is an iconic view into the life of pirates of old. Follow along with the extraordinary tale of a boy, Jim Hawkins, who chances to come into possession of Captain Flint’s treasure map, after a buccaneer takes a room at Jim’s father’s inn and later dies. The map spreads its ill luck to all who know of it. A local squire outfits a ship to voyage to the Treasure Island, unearth the treasure, and bring it home. Little does he suspect, however, that the man he has hired aboard as cook was formerly Flint’s quartermaster, the deceitful and disloyal, greedy and visceral Long John Silver, who then connives to hire many of his old mates. Once ashore, pirates being pirates, what follows is a mutiny. Jim and a handful of honest men find themselves harried and hunted by the rest of the crew, leaving the listener on the edge of their seat. The pirate treasure, amassed by so much blood and death, is about to reach out and claim more victims! The unexpected and complex relationship that develops between Silver and Jim helps transform what starts out as just another pirate adventure story, into a deeply moving study of a boy’s growth into manhood. As the story evolves, Jim learns hard lessons about friendship, loyalty, courage, and honor, as well as the uncertain meaning of good and evil.
